Air cooling
Cooling system components
The cooling system comprises several parts, including fans. Every fan is equipped with a three-
phase combination starter with adequate rated power (combination of motor circuit breaker and
low-voltage drive). Each cell cabinet (left and right) has one differential pressure monitor.
Function of the cooling system
The cooling system functions as follows:
● Each fan is connected to its own individual low-voltage drive.
● Each drive has a motor circuit breaker at its input, which is connected to the auxiliary power
bus (power source) through a fast release connector.
● Each drive is connected to a Modbus-RTU network, from where it receives control and
speed commands from the main control system. Every fan can be disconnected from the
network without interrupting the network as each fan is connected through a connector.
● The closed-loop speed control of the fan is based on the differential pressure change, the
air intake temperature and the cell temperature.
● Depending on the instantaneous load, if one or several fans are switched off, then this can
influence the differential pressure and temperature measurement causing the drive to shut
down.
● The logical principle of operation of the fan shown in detail in function diagram -9805-.
Voltage
The auxiliary voltage must always be connected before switching in the medium voltage.
Fan and speed settings
Although the drives are very efficient, power losses of several hundred kilowatts can occur in
the form of heat dissipated by the system. This power loss (heat) must be quickly transferred
to the ambient air or in the building structure so that the ambient temperature does not exceed
the rated operating conditions.
NOTICE
Air cooling
Customers are responsible for ensuring that adequate cooling is guaranteed at the air intake
to every drive.
The converter has a forced-air cooling system comprising parallel cooling circuits with fans fed
from the line supply. Fans located on the roof section of the cell cabinet draw-in cooling air
through the cells, rectifier and the branch reactors and blow it upwards and out through the roof
section of the cell cabinet.
