HP Heavy-Duty Industrial Tilting Spindle Shaper
Changing Speeds
The Model W1807 operates at 3900, 5000, 7200, and 9400
RPM.
The speed is changed by moving the V-belt between dif-
ferent motor and spindle pulleys (see
Figure 21
).
Note:
Follow the same procedures to re-tension or replace
the V-belt.
Keep these tips in mind when selecting a cutter speed for
your workpiece:
• Use scrap stock to find the right cutter speed and
feed rate so that the resulting cut is smooth, and
requires very little sanding to finish.
• Reduce cutter speed or increase feed rate if your
workpiece becomes glazed or burned.
• Increase cutter speed or reduce feed rate if your
workpiece shows a rough or washboard surface.
• Use slower speeds for larger cutters. At the same
spindle speed, the knives on larger cutters must
move much faster to cover the same rotational dis-
tance as smaller cutters (see
Figure 22
).
To change shaper speeds, do these steps:
1.
DISCONNECT THE SHAPER FROM POWER!
2.
Open the motor access door, and identify the belt
locking handle and tensioning bar (see
Figure 23
).
3.
Loosen the locking handle, and move the belt ten-
sioning bar toward the back to release V-belt ten-
sion.
4.
Move the V-belt to the required pulleys.
