Testing
4 - 3
This section contains instructions for minimum performance testing of the Coastal Cruiser 2.0, Coastal
Commander 2.0 and Offshore Commander 2.0 Liferafts. The performance test provides a functional
equipment check to establish the ability of the systems and components to perform required design
function or before the reinstallation of rafts removed from service.
Maintenance inspections for the Commander rafts occur every three (3) years or sooner if necessary
depending on the prevailing conditions. Maintenance inspections for the Cruiser rafts occur (2) years
after purchase and annually thereafter.
Additional inspections are required for the following:
A.
A raft has been removed from its carrying case, functionally tested, or inflated/deployed for
demonstration purposes. Perform the inspection before the raft is returned to service
regardless of the date of the last maintenance inspection.
B.
A raft has been subjected to severe handling of adverse conditions to ensure no damage
has occurred to the raft.
See Chapter 10 Tools, Equipment, and Materials for detailed descriptions of any tools used in the
following testing procedures. These tools are necessary for testing the liferaft. When not in use, the
test equipment and special tools are to be kept in good condition and safe from damage.
It will be necessary to remove the packed liferaft from the vessel in order to perform testing
procedures. Refer to Chapter 3 – Disassembly of this manual for information regarding unpacking of
the liferaft. Ensure the working area is clean and dry, free from sharp projections, and large enough to
fit the liferaft. The work surface should be smooth, preferably constructed of linoleum or PVC
covering.
Warning: Use extreme caution when handling any part of the inflation system. The
inflation system is charged and armed. Inadvertent activation of the inflation
system may cause personal injury or damage raft components.
Caution: Extreme care must be exercised when handling a liferaft to protect it from
punctures or tears. Do not step or walk on any part of the liferaft. Do not drop
or throw the liferaft whether packed or unpacked.
Caution: Unless necessary, do not perform a functional test on an inflation system
component while the inflation system is still attached to the liferaft. Repeated
deployment, especially when the raft is not in the water, may cause premature
deterioration of the raft fabric in the vicinity of the CO
2
port. Inflate the raft
using compressed air through the topping-off inflation valves.
Note:
When possible, use a closed-end box wrench instead of an open end wrench to
assure optimum tool grip and to minimize damage to valve and body surfaces.
