3. Inspection, points to verify

Your safety is related to the integrity of your equipment.
Petzl recommends a detailed inspection by a competent person at least once every
12 months (depending on current regulations in your country, and your conditions
of usage). Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com. Record the results on
your PPE inspection form: type, model, manufacturer contact info, serial number or
individual number, dates: manufacture, purchase, first use, next periodic inspection;
problems, comments, inspector’s name and signature.

Before each use

Check the condition of the harness straps and attachment points.
Verify that the FAST LT PLUS buckles function properly.
Check the presence and condition of the STRINGs and the CAPTIVs, and that they
are correctly assembled with the connectors / webbing.
Look for cuts, wear and damage due to use, to heat, to chemicals... Be particularly
careful to check for cut or loose threads.
Consult the details of the inspection procedure to be carried out for each item of
PPE at Petzl.com.
Contact Petzl if you have any doubts.

During use

It is important to regularly monitor the condition of the product and its connections
to the other equipment in the system. Make sure that all items of equipment are
correctly positioned with respect to each other.

4. Compatibility

Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system in your
application (compatible = good functional interaction).
The STEF (S059AA00) is compatible with the 2020 NEST (S061AA00), but is not
compatible with the pre-2020 NEST (S61).

5. Installing the STEF on the litter

The STEF single strap is connected to the NEST head end attachment point and
the double straps are connected to the STEF attachment points on the NEST. The
Sm’D carabiner must be placed upward. The straps must not be twisted.
Litter hauling is done only on the SWIVEL, or on the litter’s head end attachment
point.
Warning: depending on the products used, (configuration before 2020 or after
2020), be sure to use the correct attachment points by referring to the drawings.

6. Installing the patient

1. Place the litter on a stable base.
Open the flaps and lay them aside. Unbuckle the harness straps. Loosen the foot
support straps.
Place the patient on the litter. The patient’s shoulders are to be placed at the top of
the foam pad, regardless of his or her height. The patient must be wearing a helmet
and protective eyewear.
2. Lock the FAST LT PLUS buckles on the torso and leg straps, observing the color
code. Warning: observe the correct strap configuration on the patient, as indicated
in the drawings.
3. Fasten the positioning straps.
Adjust the length of the foot support straps and fasten the foot support buckles.
Make sure all of the straps are tight enough to hold the patient securely, without
creating painful pressure points.
4. Fold the head and foot covers over and fasten the head and foot cover buckles.
Close the flaps, or fold them to the sides, depending on the temperature, presence
of water... Tighten the flap straps. The patient’s arms can be inside or outside of
the litter.
Some safety elements may or may not be secured in place, depending upon the
nature of the patient’s wounds as determined by the physician, and the difficulty of
the evacuation.

7. Attachment points

Breaking strength of the attachment points: 15 kN.
Use only these points to connect the litter to an anchor.
When using the side attachment points, be sure to always use the two points
together.

8. Litter handling points

The litter handling points consist of the eight carry handles, as well as the eight
accessory attachment points.
Handle breaking strength: 4 kN.
Accessory attachment point breaking strength: 1 kN.
Warning: these points must not be used to attach the litter to an anchor, nor to
anchor a person.

9. Evacuation configurations

Each of the evacuation configurations applies to the following two configurations:
- As of 2020: the NEST on its own, or combined with the STEF.
- Before 2020: the pre-2020 NEST on its own, or combined with the STEF for the
pre-2020 NEST.
Be sure to follow the diagram for installing the STEF on the litter for each of the
configurations above.
For reasons of clarity, the drawings do not show all of the techniques used during
rescue with a litter. Get training in these techniques before using the litter.
Warning: do not hoist the litter on the carry handles.

A. Vertical litter

Evacuation is done using the head end attachment point. Adapted for narrow
openings. Limits rockfall risk for the patient. Minimum patient comfort.

B. Near-vertical litter

We advise you to use the STEF. Good comfort/bulk compromise.

C. Horizontal litter

We advise you to use the STEF. Comfortable for the patient, but increases bulk
and patient exposure to rockfall. May be ordered by the doctor.

D. Tyrolean

10. Evacuation with the STEF

Each of the evacuation techniques with the STEF applies to the following two
configurations:
- As of 2020: NEST and STEF.
- Before 2020: pre-2020 NEST and STEF for the pre-2020 NEST.
Be sure to follow the diagram for installing the STEF on the litter for each of the
configurations above.

a. Litter in horizontal position

To secure this position, clip the Sm’D to the SWIVEL.

b. Changing from horizontal position to inclined position

The rescuer, attached to an independent rope, faces the litter. S/he detaches the
Sm’D carabiner. The rescuer then positions his/her hands on the two straps (foot
end) and tilts the litter, possibly by pushing on the litter with his/her feet. Warning:
do not place your hands on the head end; you may not be able to control the rate
of tilt, and there is a risk of pinching your hands.

c. Changing from inclined position to horizontal position

The rescuer attaches his/her short lanyard to the ring on the STEF, which will
serve as a fixed point to help guide the maneuver. The rescuer ensures that the
lanyard is taut.
- The controller and counterweight lower the litter. It then tilts naturally.
- The rescuer clips the Sm’D into the SWIVEL to secure the horizontal position.
The controller and counterweight raise the litter. The rescuer removes his/her
lanyard from the ring.

11. Transporting the litter

The litter can be stored in the carrying case (S062AA00). To transport the litter in a
vehicle, you can remove the longitudinal and transverse stays to fold it.

12. Additional information

When to retire your equipment

WARNING: an exceptional event can lead you to retire a product after only one
use, depending on the type and intensity of usage and the environment of usage
(harsh environments, marine environments, sharp edges, extreme temperatures,
chemicals...).
A product must be retired when:
- It is over 10 years old and made of plastic or textiles.
- It has been subjected to a major fall or load.
- It fails to pass inspection. You have any doubt as to its reliability.
- You do not know its full usage history.
- When it becomes obsolete due to changes in legislation, standards, technique or
incompatibility with other equipment...
Destroy these products to prevent further use.
