• Do not allow foreign particles or liquids to get into the modular lightweight knee joint. Avoid
exposing prosthetic components to corrosive elements such as fresh water, salt water, acids
and other liquids. Using this medical product in such environmental conditions will render all
claims against Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH null and void.
• The modular lightweight knee joint as well as damaged components may be opened or repaired
only by certified Ottobock Service technicians.
• The environment and usage conditions may compromise the functionality of the knee joint. To reduce
the risk for the patient, the knee joint must not be used after noticeable functional changes occur.
Noticeable functional changes may include poor response, incomplete extension, diminished swing
phase control or stance phase instability, abnormal noises, etc. Please contact a specialist work-
shop to have the prosthesis inspected if you discover damage or noticeable functional changes.
2.4 Prosthetist qualifications
The fitting of patients with the 3R95 and 3R95=1 Modular Lightweight Knee Joints may only be
carried out by a prosthetist.
2.5 Construction and function
(Fig. 1)
Upper and lower joint sections are constructed of light metal and are connected to one another
by a specially designed axis. For swing phase control, a miniaturised hydraulic unit is integrated
into the joint body. It serves to create dynamic extension resistances that optimise the gait pattern
by preventing excessive heel rise during flexion and terminal impact during extension.
The resistance to movement (damping behaviour) can be easily changed by adjusting the cross
section of flow. Knee flexion and knee extension resistances are independently adjustable.
• The arrangement of the linkage geometry allows powerful flexion resistance even with a high
degree of knee flexion.
• At high walking speed, a special feature of the hydraulic unit reduces the flexion angle.
• Extension resistance may be set to a low value, since it automatically increases gradually as
the knee approaches full extension.
Unlike mechanical gait controls, the hydraulic unit automatically adjusts to different walking speeds
thus ensuring a harmonious pattern of movements. The flexion angle of approx. 135° with the 3R95
and of approx. 155° with the 3R95=1 is limited when the modular adapter contacts the lower joint
section (Fig. 1 also applies to the 3R95).
