Lubrication and Maintenance

Operation 33 - Change Engine Oil and Filter - Cummins Only

1. Change oil filter, 1, when the engine oil is changed. 

2. Remove plug, 2, on bottom of the engine oil pan and drain oil 
into a suitable container. Dispose of waste oil according to federal, 
state and local regulations. 

3. Clean area around oil filter. Remove oil filter using filter 
wrench. Make sure sealing ring is removed and clean filter 
mounting surface.

4. Apply a thin film of new oil to new filter sealing ring.

5. Install new filter and tighten until sealing ring contacts mounting 
surface. Tighten an additional 3/4 turn.

WARNING: 

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. 

OVERTIGHTENING CAN DAMAGE THE FILTER.

6. Install plug in engine oil pan.

7. Remove oil fill cap, 3, and add 9.5 L (10 qt) of oil.

8. Start engine and allow to idle for 3 to 5 minutes to circulate oil. 
Turn off engine and wait 15 minutes.

9. Check oil level using dipstick. If necessary, add oil until level is 
between minimum and maximum marks on dipstick. Check filter 
and drain plug for leakage.

Operation 34 - Check Cat Engine Valves

Check Cat engine valves after initial 500 hours of operation and 
every 1000 thereafter.

NOTE:  

It is very important to follow this valve lash adjustment 

procedure. Do not use the traditional opposing cylinders method. 
Failure to follow the correct procedure may result in serious engine 
damage.
