3.04.04 PREPARING FOR USE
Checking the sterile packaging
Immediately before using the
proGAV Check-
mate
, the sterile packaging must be visually
inspected in order to check the integrity of the
sterile barrier system. The products should only
be removed from the packaging immediately
prior to use.
Checking the integrity of the
proGAV Tools
Prior to use, the instruments must be checked
for integrity. To this end, all instruments must be
visually inspected.
3.04.05 USING THE INSTRUMENTS
Adjusting the adjustable differential pressure
unit of the
proGAV
requires the following steps:
1. Localisation
The adjustable differential pressure unit is
localised under the skin (Fig. 7).
Fig. 7: Localisation of the adjustable differential pres-
sure unit
2. Test procedure
NOTE
The
proGAV Verification Tool
and the
proGAV
Verification Compass
react sensitively to
external magnetic fields. In order to rule out
unwanted interactions, the
proGAV Adjust-
ment Tool
should not be placed in the imme-
diate vicinity of the
proGAV Verification Tool
or the
proGAV Verification Compass
when
determining the opening pressure. We rec-
ommend a distance of approx. 30 cm.
2a. Testing with the
proGAV
Verification Tool
WARNING
The
Verification Tool
must be placed cen-
trally over the valve if possible, otherwise the
determined opening pressure may be incor-
rect!
The
proGAV Verification Tool
is centred over the
valve. The marking on the
Verification Tool
must
face the proximal catheter (leading to the ven-
tricle) (Fig. 8). The arrow on the bottom of the
Verification Tool
indicates the direction of flow
of the cerebrospinal fluid.

a) correct
b) incorrect
The release button on the
Verification Tool
is
pressed and the set pressure level is then read.
2b. Testing with the
proGAV
Verification Compass
In addition to determining the set opening pres-
sure with the
proGAV Verification Tool
, the set
opening pressure can also be determined using
the
proGAV Verification Compass
. The
proGAV
Verification Compass
(Fig. 9) is placed on the
skin over the implanted valve and moved in
small circles until the inner disc is firmly aligned.
The opening pressure corresponds to the value
displayed in the direction of the
Ventricular
Catheter
.

NOTE
Small air bubbles in the compass chamber
do not impair its function.
