OPERATION OF THE SG32-1500M
SG32-UG-EN-V01 Dec 2016

higher than the voltage that the fault broke down at. The selected voltage is
displayed on the analogue D.C. Kilovolt meter (item 22).
10.
Push the Single Shot release button (item 15) and the impulse or surge
voltage is applied to the cable under test.
By observing the Voltmeter and Ammeter the operator can confirm that
there has been a full discharge.
Normally in Arc Reflection only one discharge is required; hence the setting
of the Surge Timer Control knob (item 13) has no effect in this test mode.
11.
The resultant trace on the MTDR is recorded and overlaid with the original (reference)
pulse echo trace. The point of divergence of the two traces, with the arc reflection trace going
negative of the two traces indicates the location of the fault.
If operation “fails to trigger”, increase voltage and repeat steps 6 – 10.
If operation fails and no point of divergence can be found repeat the operation
.
NOTE:
The features and benefits of "Multi-Shot" and "Differential Arc
Reflection (DART)" and how to configure them are described in
Addendum 3 - MTDR100 User Guide. The SG32-1500M is
operated in both Arc Reflection methods identically
.
12.
Pushing the HV OFF button (item 9) will discharge the selected test voltage.
The HV OFF pushbutton’s Red LED will extinguish and the HV ON
pushbutton’s (item 10) Green LED will illuminate. The unit will remain in
the ARC REFL test Mode till the user exits from that mode or select a
different mode.
13.
To exit ARC REFL Mode, push the ARC REFL pushbutton (item 20)
which engages the internal earthing/grounding and discharges any High
Voltage. Both the ARC REFL & TDR test Mode buttons’ Blue LEDs will
illuminate, indicating that either of these test modes are now available for
selection.
ICE / Current Impulse (Surge Impulse) - High Voltage Prelocation
1.
Set the rotary (High) Voltage Control knob (item 12) to the “Zero Start”
position.
If the rotary High Voltage Control Knob (item 12) is not set to the “Zero
Start” position prior to pushing the HV ON pushbutton (item 10), a “Zero
Start” interlock error will occur causing the “ZERO START” interlock error
LED to be illuminated momentarily and the selected test mode will be
cancelled.
2.
Set the SELECT Voltage Range knob (item 14) to the desired “surge” range
either 16 or 32kV.
