CHAPTER 13
Contribute Administration Overview
Macromedia Contribute introduces a new model for website management and collaboration
software. This model consists of a website administrator who is responsible for both managing the
website and controlling who has access to it, and contributors (also known as users) who are
responsible for providing and updating website content. Each contributor is a member of a group
of users, known as a permission group, that has access to specified parts of the website.

About the Contribute website-editing model
Contribute is designed to be used in an environment where a system administrator or other web
professional is responsible for managing and maintaining an organization’s website, and where
groups of users need to publish information on the website.
Organizations often need to update information on both their external (publicly accessible)
websites and their internal (intranet) websites. In the traditional model of website maintenance,
this information is usually updated only by web professionals who understand HTML and other
web authoring languages. Using Contribute, people with little or no knowledge of web authoring
languages can easily update web pages.
As a Contribute website administrator, you are responsible for determining who can connect to
your website and for creating connections to websites for those users to use, as well as specifying
what web page elements each group of users can modify.
Setting up Contribute
Your first tasks as an administrator for a Contribute website are to set up a connection to your
website, create permission groups, set editing permissions for each group you create, and
distribute a connection key that allows users to easily connect to your website.
To deploy Contribute:
1
Install Contribute on your computer.
2
Create a connection to your website. See Chapter 14, “Creating and Managing Website
Connections,” on page 143.
3
Decide who in your organization needs to be able to update the website’s content.
