Step 1. Read the safety information (see Chapter 2 “Safety information” on page 3).
Step 2. Turn off the server and any attached devices.
Step 3. Turn off the peripheral devices and disconnect all power cords; then, remove the cover (see the
Installation and User Guide for instructions).
Step 4. Remove the applicable air baffle.
Step 5. Remove the microprocessor and heat sink (see “Removing a microprocessor and heat sink” on
page 136).
Attention: When you remove a microprocessor and heat sink, be sure to keep each heat sink with
its microprocessor for reinstallation.
Step 6. Use a T8 torx screwdriver and remove the four screws that secure the retention module to the
system board; then, lift the retention module from the system board.
Step 7. If you are instructed to return the heat sink retention module, follow all the packaging instructions,
and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
Installing a heat sink retention module
To install a heat sink retention module, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Read the safety information (see Chapter 2 “Safety information” on page 3).
Step 2. Align the retention module with the holes on the system board.
Step 3. Use the T8 torx screwdriver to reinstall the four screws that you removed earlier.
Step 4. Reinstall the microprocessor and heat sink (see “Removing a microprocessor and heat sink”
on page 136t).
Step 5. Reinstall the air baffle.
Step 6. Install the cover (see Installation and User Guide for instructions).
Step 7. Slide the server into the rack.
