VLAN Tagging/Trunk Mode

Enterprise

NOS

software

supports

802.1Q

VLAN

tagging,

providing

standards

‐

based

VLAN

support

for

Ethernet

systems.

Tagging

places

the

VLAN

identifier

the

frame

header

packet,

allowing

each

port

belong

multiple

VLANs.

When

you

add

port

multiple

VLANs,

you

also

must

enable

tagging

that

port.

Since

tagging

fundamentally

changes

the

format

frames

transmitted

tagged

port,

you

must

carefully

plan

network

designs

prevent

tagged

frames

from

being

transmitted

devices

that

not

support

802.1Q

VLAN

tags,

devices

where

tagging

not

enabled.

Important

terms

used

with

the

802.1Q

tagging

feature

are:



VLAN

identifier

(VID)—the

‐

bit

portion

the

VLAN

tag

the

frame

header

that

identifies

explicit

VLAN.



Port

VLAN

identifier

(PVID)—a

classification

mechanism

that

associates

port

with

specific

VLAN.

For

example,

port

with

PVID

(PVID

=3)

assigns

all

untagged

frames

received

this

port

VLAN

Any

untagged

frames

received

the

switch

are

classified

with

the

PVID

the

receiving

port.



Tagged

frame—a

frame

that

carries

VLAN

tagging

information

the

header.

This

VLAN

tagging

information

‐

bit

field

(VLAN

tag)

the

frame

header

that

identifies

the

frame

belonging

specific

VLAN.

Untagged

frames

are

marked

(tagged)

with

this

classification

they

leave

the

switch

through

port

that

configured

tagged

port.



Untagged

frame—

frame

that

does

not

carry

any

VLAN

tagging

information

the

frame

header.



Untagged

member—a

port

that

has

been

configured

untagged

member

specific

VLAN.

When

untagged

frame

exits

the

switch

through

untagged

member

port,

the

frame

header

remains

unchanged.

When

tagged

frame

exits

the

switch

through

untagged

member

port,

the

tag

stripped

and

the

tagged

frame

changed

untagged

frame.


