4-10 ROLLERS
4-10.1
For maximum roller life, the rollers need to
touch each other across the gangs. This ad-
justment is made by loosening the u-bolts
which attach the bearing standards. The
bearing lock collars must also be loosened.
Bump the standard and the u-bolt toward the
center of the machine until the rollers touch
each other. Retighten the bearing lock col-
lars. Retighten the u-bolts to at least 200 foot
pounds of torque. Be careful not to put an
end thrust or side load on the bearings
(See
Figure 4-6)
.
4-10.2
This adjustment will need to be made
twice during the first 200 acres of operation.
After the initial adjustments have been made,
inspect the mulcher routinely and adjust roll-
ers when necessary.
4-11 SCRAPERS
4-11.1
The scrapers should be centered between
the fins of the rollers to prevent excessive
wear. For most field conditions, the scrapers
should be adjusted so there is 1/8" to 3/16"
clearance between the rollers and the scrap-
ers. There is approximately 1" of vertical ad-
justment. As the scrapers wear, it will be
necessary to adjust the scrapers
(See Fig-
ures 4-7 and 4-8)
.
4-11.2
It is normal for the scrapers on the rear
rollers to wear unevenly. This is caused by
the position of the scraper in relation to the
spring tooth in front of it.
4-11.3
The mulcher should not be used in wet
field conditions or when mud clings to all of
the rollers at one time. The soil will be ad-
versely affected and scraper life will de-
crease.
