When the fireplace is connected to a chimney, the safety distance

2A.4 CONNECTING THE FIREPLACE TO A FLUE

(Figs. 2

and 3)

The fireplace may have a top-flue connection (Fig. 2) or a rear-flue
connection (Fig. 3), to either an existing brick-lined chimney or a
modular chimney construction. (Kastor has a wide range of easily
installed, prefabricated modular chimneys specially adapted for use
with Kastor wood-burning heaters.)
Any unused flue connection on the fireplace must be sealed with a
covering plate (1). It is also necessary to fit the protective metal plate
(2) to the back of the fireplace.

2A.4.1 MASONRY CHIMNEY

A flue pipe (supplied) is used to connect the fireplace to the flue.
Make a hole in the chimney breast that is 20 mm larger than the
diameter of the flue pipe.
Seal the gap between the masonry and the flue pipe with fire-resistant
mineral wool. Do not cement the flue pipe in place. (The construction
must allow contraction and expansion due to the heating and cooling
process.)

A top-flue connection to a brick chimney may also be effected by
using a 90° elbow pipe.

For soapstone fireplaces: First fit the flue pipe in the hole in the
chimney breast and then slide the fireplace carefully into place. Make
sure that the flue pipe is well inside the flue opening in the fireplace
body

2B CAVALIER – INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

2B.1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Follow these instructions carefully and always comply with local
regulations.

Failure to comply with these instructions can damage your
Kastor fireplace and cause a fire.

Your Kastor fireplace is supplied with all the materials required for
assembly and installation with the exception of the textured coating for
the surround. Always check that the delivery is complete before
commencing assembly and installation work.
The stone surround consists of several building blocks, which must be
cemented together. The fire-box is positioned at the centre of these
blocks and the sheet metal plates are placed to form a rear wall.
All components must be dry before assembly commences.
You will require the following tools to carry out the assembly work:
hacksaw, mixing tub for mortar, builder’s trowel, adjustable spanner,
brush, plastic sheeting, masking tape and mineral wool.
The building blocks are cemented into place whereas the rear panels
are secured by bolts.
Before fitting block number 5 in place, the iron bar used to reinforce and
stabilise the block during transport must be carefully sawn off. (Fig.1)
Protect all visible surfaces of the fire-box against cement spills and
scratches etc., during assembly work by covering them with plastic
sheeting and masking tape. Handle the building blocks with care to
prevent any damage. Two people are required for installation and
assembly work.
Do not forget to remove all traces of tape and plastic sheeting from the
fireplace body and glass panes before using the fireplace for the first
time.

2B.2. STRUCTURAL SUPPORT

This masonry fireplace weighs 240 kg. Check to make sure that
the floor joists are strong enough to support the weight.

The

fireplace must stand firm and steady on a level surface. The base
must be absolutely horizontal.

If the fireplace is not connected to an existing chimney, the weight
of the flue must also be taken into account.

For further advice and instructions concerning the installation of a
wood-burning fireplace, consult the local fire protection
authorities.

2B.3. SAFETY DISTANCES

The distances given below are the minimum safety distances.

Failure to observe these minimum safes distances may
involve a fire hazard!

The minimum safety distances from the fireplace to combustible
materials are:
Rear, 5 cm; Front, 50 cm; Above, 60 cm;
Sides, 5 cm; Glass sides, 50 cm.
A protective plate or equivalent protective surface of metal or
some other non-combustible material must be placed
underneath and in front of the fireplace on floors that are made
of a combustible material. The protective place must project at
least 400 mm beyond the front edge of the fireplace and 200
mm beyond each side of the fireplace door.
The glass surfaces on Cavalier are classified as “hot surfaces”
(max. temp. 350°C).

2B.4. CONNECTING THE FIREPLACE TO A FLUE

The fireplace is connected to an existing brick-lined flue with the
special flue pipe. If connected to a brick-lined chimney, the
fireplace may also be offset from the chimney opening with the
help of a separate flue module from the Kastor range of
accessories.
Make a hole in the flue that is approximately 20 mm larger than the
outer diameter of the flue pipe. The lower edge of this hole must be
875 mm above floor height. Ensure that the fireplace is placed so that
the soot hatch is easily accessible.

2B.5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR MIXING HEAT-RESISTANT
MORTAR

The fireplace comes with a 5.5 kg bag of dry mortar.
Mix the mortar as follows (in the event of any queries, please contact
Höganäs AB in Sweden.

-

The ambient temperature when mixing and working with the
mortar must be 10–25°C.

-

You will need 0.2 – 0.3 litres of water for 1 kg of mortar. To
achieve the right blend, add water and mortar in small portions
until the mix has the right consistency and is easy to work with.

-

Once the mortar has been mixed, it must be used before it
begins to harden. At room temperature the hardening process
begins in 1–2 hours. The higher the ambient temperature, the
sooner the hardening process begins.

-

At room temperature it takes about 48 hours before the mortar
has dried and hardened all the way through. However, do not
use the fireplace until at least 4 days after the completion of
cementing work.

Tip: To ensure that the mortar hardens properly, it may be a good idea
to raise the ambient temperature a few degrees above normal room
temperature after completion of cementing work. (One simple way of
doing this is to place a convection fan heater or similar heat source on
a low setting close to the masonry surround.) This ensures that the
construction dries out fully before use and minimises the risk of any
cracks forming when the first fire is lit in the fireplace.

SIMPLE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DURING ASSEMBLY
WORK:

-

Use protective gloves to prevent any skin irritations. Wash your
hands in plenty of water if they come into contact with the mortar.

-

If the event that any mortar splashes in the eyes, rinse the eyes
with liberal amounts of clean, running water for at least 15
minutes.

2B.6. CEMENTING THE BLOCKS

-

Use a little clean water to dampen the edges of the blocks that
are to be cemented together. Apply an even layer of mortar 5–8
mm thick.

Tip:

Use an ordinary plant sprayer to dampen the edges of the blocks

as you proceed with the assembly work.

-

Place the blocks on top of one another, applying just enough
pressure to compress the layer of mortar to a thickness of 2–3
mm. Do not press so hard that the previous joint opens up.

-

Take care to keep the holes in blocks 2 and 5 free from mortar
(Fig. 2A). These holes are designed to accommodate the metal
pins in the corners of the blocks.
