Bass Management Use Cases
Using Full-Range Loudspeakers
A straight forward loudspeaker setup uses for each main loudspeaker a
large loudspeaker.
Optionally
, a subwoofer is used to play the low frequency
effects (LFE) channel (the “.1” of 5.1 and 7.1 content).
1
1 If no subwoofer is used, then the LFE channel is
mixed into the main loudspeaker channels. If you want
to ignore the LFE channel, set LFE gain to Off
(Chapter 5).

Using Small Loudspeakers
A system with full-range loudspeakers is often not practical, because full-
range loudspeakers are large in size, heavy, and expensive. Another straight
forward commonly used setup is the use of small main loudspeakers. In this
case,
a subwoofer is needed
, reproducing the low frequencies and the LFE
channel.

SMALL
SMALL
If you use modestly sized full band loudspeakers and your subwoofer extends
to lower frequencies, you may also want to define your loudspeakers as small,
such that frequencies below their operating range will be reproduced by the
subwoofer.
