Try removing sources of nearby mechanical or electrical noise. For example, nearby pumps,
fans, or other machinery with moving parts.
Placing the unit on top of soft foam, bubble wrap or other material can help suppress vibrations.
It is possible that air drafts are affecting the quality of the scan. Place an enclosure over the unit
to eliminate air drafts.
7.4.2.2.
Noisy Scan (Point Noise)
Small “point” noise can occur in some scans. This type of scan artifact can be easily removed in
post-processing in Gwyddion using the Mark scars or Limit Range tools. It is usually caused by
electrostatic effects from samples that are electrically resistive.
7.4.2.3.
Wave pattern
If the topography of the sample is showing an unexpected wave topography, it is possible that
the sample and/or tip is charged. Pause the scan, go to the Approach tab and click on
Disengage.
Follow the steps in Section 7.3.3 False Engage.
Topography scan showing a characteristic wave pattern after a “False Engage”.
7.4.3.
Data Plateau
The Z scanner has a certain scan range. If the Z scanner reaches the minimum or maximum of
the
range, data can no longer be collected, and the image may be “clipped”, also known as a
data plateau.
In this scan, the data cuts out near the bottom.
