UMOD hardware theory of operation 3–79
In an independently-timed system, the satellite link is operated
with independent transmit and receive timing. The DTE device at
each end of the link must be able to withstand propagation delays,
along with transmit and receive clocks that may be far out of
synchronization due to their independent operation. If an
independent clock source configuration is selected, the satellite
link is in effect, being operated as two independent one-way links.
Data errors will not occur due to timing inconsistencies that might
have otherwise have happened if they were sharing a common
timing source.
If the link is operated with each UMOD supplying its own
transmit and receive clock timing, be aware of the following:
•
The two clock sources must be close enough in frequency
that the number of bits slips that will occur are tolerable in
the system over a given amount of time.
•
There must be an elastic buffer in the receive path at each
UMOD to negate propagation-related delay and phase
differences between the receive timing source and the local
clock, and then adjust the received data output to the DTE
device.
This section describes independent–timed plesiochronous systems
with phase coherent and limited phase coherent DTE for different
software versions. Software versions are grouped as 2.01 and
lower, and 3.03 and higher.
For software version 2.01 and lower. For an independent–timed
plesiochronous system, you may use the modem’s internal clock
or an external station clock.
The examples shown in figures 3-54 and 3-55 assume the
following:
•
The DTE data rates are all the same
•
The DTE requires a slaved phase relationship where no
phase wander is allowed
•
If the station clock is used, input must be well within
$
100
ppm, typically 10 or 1 ppm
Note
With software version 2.01 and lower, the DTE’s internal clock cannot
be used as a receive clock source.
•
Set Buffer ON at both ends and:
- If the modem’s internal clock is used, TCS must be set
to TXDTE, and RCS must be set to Station. Do not
apply a signal to the station clock input (see figure
3-54)
