For example, infants and small
children left in a vehicle on a hot
day can die from heatstroke. A
child left alone with the key in the
ignition switch can accidentally set
the vehicle in motion, possibly
injuring themselves or others.
Leaving children without
adult supervision is illegal in some
countries, and can be very
hazardous.
Even very young
children learn how to unlock
vehicle doors, turn on the ignition
switch, and open the tailgate,
which can lead to accidental injury
or death.
Children who play in vehicles can
accidentally get trapped inside the
vehicle. Teach your children not to
play in or around vehicles.
‘‘Never let children kneel on seats or
stand while the vehicle is in motion.
The violent forces created during
emergency braking will cause the
children to be thrown forward. The
children could be seriously injured or
killed.’’
If a child wraps a loose
seat belt around their neck, they
can be seriously or fatally injured.
(See pages
and
for how to
activate and deactivate the
lockable retractor.)

Always take the ignition
key with you whenever you leave the
vehicle alone (with other occupants).
Use the main power
window switch to prevent children
from opening the windows. Using this
feature will prevent children from
playing with the windows, which
could expose them to hazards or
distract the driver (see page
).

Do not leave children alone in a
vehicle.
Keep vehicle keys/remote
transmitters out of the reach of
children.
Lock both doors and the tailgate
when your vehicle is not in use.
Make sure any unused seat belt
that a child can reach is buckled,
the lockable retractor is activated,
and the belt is f ully retracted and
locked.
