D.20 RIO - HARDWARE USER’S MANUAL
D.20 LINK
CHAPTER 3: CONNECTING TO DEVICES AND NETWORKS
•
On D.20 cables (GE part number 977-0089), the shielded cable end can be located
opposite to the cable end labeled with the GE part number.
•
D-type connector covers must provide EMC shielding (e.g. metallized plastic or die cast
metal covers).
•
Maximum D.20 cable length 1000 ft (300 m)
D.20 Link
Communications between the D.20 RIO and the D20 peripheral I/O modules are carried
over a high-speed, high-level data link control (HDLC) protocol called the D.20 Link. The
D.20 Link has the following features:
•
RS-485 serial link, half duplex, 250 kbps
•
D.20 frame using HDLC protocol format with Manchester encoding
•
Supports up to 30 D20 I/O peripheral modules in a standard configuration
•
Repeater/extension modules (GE part number 520-0118, 520-0117, and 520-0148)
can be used to extend the distance between peripheral modules
D.20 RIO supports all peripherals equipped with PCommon 3.X series. Replacement of the
PCommon chips is required for interfacing with existing peripherals equipped with 2.X
series of PCommon.

Connection scenarios
There are four ways to connect the D.20 RIO to peripheral devices:
•
“Single D.20 RIO terminated” on page 31
•
“Single D.20 RIO looped” on page 31
•
“Redundant D.20 RIO looped” on page 32
•
“Redundant D.20 RIO redundant link” on page 32
Refer to the section: “Configuring Single and Redundant D.20 RIOs” on page 54 for
information on configuring D.20 RIOs for the single and redundant connection scenarios.
