Switch Stacking
Each optional stacking module allows up to four DES-3226S/SR or DGS-3212SR switches to be interconnected
via the DGS-3212SR switch. Two stacking modules may be used to form a nine-switch stack consisting of one
Master and eight Slaves, managed through the DGS-3212SR Master switch. The switch stack uses a single IP
address and is managed as a single device. The entire switch stack is managed and monitored through the
network or alternatively, through the serial port on the DGS-3212SR. The stacking arrangement is connected via
Firewire (IEE1394) in a star topology for DES-3226S/SR groups (as illustrated on page 9). When DGS-3212SR
switches are stacked in a group, the topology may be either star or ring topology.
The stacking ports are marked
IN
and
OUT
. The IEEE 1394 compliant cable must be connected from an
IN
port on one switch to an
OUT
port on the next switch in the stack.
Restrictions and Cautions for Stacking
The DGS-3212SR may serve as the Master of up to eight additional switches. The slave switch units must meet
the following criteria:
•
All additional slave switches must be the same model, that is (at the time of the writing of this manual),
the slaves must be all DES-3226S/SR switches. The slave unit types cannot be mixed within a single
stacked group.
•
DES-3226S/SR slave switches must have firmware Release IV or later loaded to operate properly with
the DGS-3212SR Master.
•
The DGS-3212SR is automatically started as the Master switch in a switch stack. In addition, the other
switches in the switch stack do not have to be configured as slaves. The DGS-3212SR can connect to a
switch in the switch stack regardless of its stacking configuration.
•
Each DEM 540 stacking module has four pairs of IEEE 1394 ports. Each pair has one port for
transmitting (OUT) and one for receiving (IN). When the stacking arrangement has been configured,
each IN/OUT pair is logically equivalent to an (Gigabit) Ethernet port, i.e. the two transmitting wires of
a Cat. 5 cable correspond to the Out port and the two receiving wires correspond to the In port. Before
the switch is configured for stacking, each Firewire (IEEE 1394) port is treated logically as an
individual 10BASE port in full-duplex mode. Therefore it is necessary to configure each switch in a
stacked group before interconnecting them and before connecting the group to the network. Since the
