Laminating - Transfer Method
This method is used when the repair is in a difficult position. The Transfer Method is similar to
Laminating in Place, except the repair plies are stacked on a sheet of release film and then wet-
ted-out with resin. The repair plies assembly is then centered and applied to repair surface.
To determine number of repair plies to prepare, reference the ply lay-up tables in the Airframe
Zone Diagrams.
If no repair ply quantity is shown, always prepare and install
twice as many repair plies as the original lay-up in order to assure that the original strength is
achieved.
Center each ply over the damage. Each ply must have half of the total overlap on all sides of the
damaged area or over the previous repair ply. The first, smallest ply must be 0.5 - 1.0 inch (1.3 -
2.5 cm) larger than the damaged area. Each following ply must be 0.5 - 1.0 inch (1.3 - 2.5 cm)
larger than the previous repair ply.
Plies must be installed in the same orientation as the original plies. Every other repair ply must
be installed in opposing orientation to prevent the repair from warping.
When using peel ply, position the peel ply on the outermost ply only. Ensure peel plies are
removed prior to secondary bonding. Do not bond plies on top of peel ply.
(a)
Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
(b)
If applicable, prepare backing plate.
(c)
(d)
(e)
If applicable, prepare EMM surfaces.
(f)
Cut two sheets of release film approximately 6 inches (15 cm) larger than the total repair
area.
(g)
Place one sheet of release film on a flat, contaminate-free work surface.
(h)
To ensure proper ply orientation, draw 0° reference line on work surface to replicate actual
repair area.
(i)
If repairing an outside, finished surface apply a sheet of peel ply with same shape and size
as outermost repair ply onto the release film.
(j)
If necessary, mix MGS L418-based filler paste and apply to fill any dents, gouges, or other
voids in prepared repair surface.
(k)
Mix structural resin.
(l)
If applicable, remove clecos or sheet metal screws used to temporarily attach backing
plate to laminate.
