Operating Principles
5-23
Input Phase
This phase begins when an operator loads a
sheet in between the input conveyor belts. This
discussion focuses on the left station. Review the
control section of this chapter and the schematics
for the appropriate right station controls.
The I/O control panel receives the signal
from PE5.
As the sheet moves into the unit between
the input ribbons and into the pneumatic
clutch/brake rollers, photosensor sets
PE1E-PE1R/PE2E-PE2R detect the
piece.
While the piece continues in between
the clutch/brake rollers, the I/O control
panel is keeping track of how long the
sensors “see” the piece in order to make
an estimate of its size. This will be used
to determine when to change speeds
during the Spread Phase.
After the sheet clears these sensor sets,
the I/O control panel energizes SV11
and SV12 to engage the clutch/brake
rollers and hold the piece.
If the I/O control panel receives another
signal from PE5 before the previous
piece has been picked up by the transfer
clamps, The I/O control panel energizes
SV9 to raise the upper inlet conveyor
ribbon temporarily to prevent a jam.

Transfer Phrase
This phase begins when the transfer clamp
assembly moves forward to take the corners of the
flatwork piece from the clutch/brake rollers.
The I/O control panel checks for a signal
from PX27 to determine whether the
transfer clamp is in its home position at
the station.
The I/O control panel energizes SV29,
causing the rodless air cylinder to move
forward until a signal is received from
PX25, indicating it is in the forward
position.
The I/O control panel energizes SV13
and SV14, causing the transfer clamps to
grip the sheet corner edges.
The I/O control panel de-energizes
SV29 and energizes SV26, causing the
rodless air cylinder to move backward,
taking the flatwork with it, looking for
a new signal from PX27, indicating the
transfer assembly has reached its home
position.
The I/O control panel energizes INV 3,
causing the left transfer motor (MTR3)
to move toward the center of the
machine.
At the same time, MTR8 and MTR10
are energized, causing the side conveyor
belt and transfer conveyor ribbons to
move, helping to properly position the
piece for the spread section.
Also at the same time, the I/O control
panel signals the SVR output card,
which controls the servomotor (upper
spreader motor), causing the spreader
clamps to move toward the center of the
machine.
At the end of the transfer phase, if
necessary, the machine de-energizes
SV9 to lower the upper inlet conveyor to
process the next piece.
