Eclipse Edge User Manual
Application Notes
• Eclipse terminals deployed behind XP4s may be any type: IDUs and/or INUs.
• The XP4 NMI card presents the following constraints when used to transport NMS:
• Its bandwidth is limited to 6kbps so care must be taken with Eclipse NMS network
design to avoid flooding the NMS channel.
• IP Packets (MTU) must be smaller than 600 bytes. Packets above this size may be
dropped by the NMI card; hence the XP4 compatibility option.
• Supporting an Eclipse network behind more than four XP4 links is not
recommended due to NMS channel jitter problems.
• The size of the Eclipse network behind an XP4 link is practically limited by the
maximum 16xE1 capacity of XP4.
• Not more than 5 hops of Eclipse should be installed behind an XP4 network.
• OSPF or RIP can be configured on the Eclipse network. They cannot be configured to
operate across an XP4 intermediary link/network (Eclipse-XP4-Eclipse).
• Software loading of an Eclipse terminal over an XP4 NMI from Portal or ProVision
is not supported at this time. It is not practical nor reliable to load where the data
transfer required may take in excess of 5 hours. Eclipse terminals should be
upgraded locally.
• Only one Portal session should be opened to Eclipse terminals on the far side of an
XP4 link or network. Note that the reaction times will be significantly longer than
normal:
• Portal auto-version updates may take many minutes. Depending on the update
required, times may be in excess of 1 hour.
• Portal launch to the opening of the System Summary screen may take up to two
minutes.
• Portal screens may take up to 2 minutes to load, except for History, Event
Browser, Network, and Circuit screens which may take up to 5 minutes to load.
• All Portal configuration operations (excluding software loading) may take up to 5
minutes to activate.
• Portal diagnostic System/Controls operations (e.g. protection switching) may
take up to 2 minutes to activate.
Date and Time Configuration
The Date/Time configuration screen,
, provides options for:
• Direct entry of date and time.
• Selection from calendar and time zone prompts.
• Synchronization with the Portal PC date/time (Synchronize With Computer).
