Cleaning the compressor during operation
5.3
These instructions for wet cleaning only apply when cleaning is carried out
with clean water and under the precondition that the enginebuilder ap-
proves the process.
The degree of contamination of the compressor stage (compressor wheel
and diffuser) depends on how clean the drawn-in air is.
Deposits can build up in the flow channels if salt, oil mist or dust are in the
intake air.
Consequences of contamination:
Impaired compressor efficiency
Higher exhaust gas temperatures
Increased fuel consumption
Increased rotor unbalance
Periodic cleaning of the compressor during operation prevents or delays a
severe increase of the contamination. It does not, however, replace the
regular service work, during which the turbocharger is completely disman-
tled and the compressor is cleaned mechanically.
The interval between periodic cleaning is very dependent on the operating
conditions. In general, cleaning should be carried out every 25 ... 100 op-
erating hours.
Should the specified cleaning intervals prove incompatible with engine
operation, please contact ABB Turbo Systems.
