more than 5 seconds, the battery will
be quickly discharged, thus making it
impossible to start the engine. The
starter can also be damaged. If the
engine will not start after 5 seconds
of cranking, return the main switch to
“
” (on), wait 10 seconds, then
crank the engine again.

Cooling water
Check for a steady flow of water from the
cooling water pilot hole. A continuous flow of
water from the cooling water pilot hole shows
that the water pump is pumping water
through the cooling water passages.
TIP:
When the engine is started, there may be a
slight delay before water flows from the cool-
ing water pilot hole.
NOTICE
ECM02251
If water is not flowing out of the cooling
water pilot hole at all times while the en-
gine is running, overheating and serious
damage could occur. Stop the engine and
check whether the cooling water inlet on
the lower case or the cooling water pilot
hole is blocked. Consult your Yamaha
dealer if the problem cannot be located
and corrected.

Warming up engine
EMU41234
Procedure for warming up engine
1. After starting the engine, warm up the
engine until the engine speed stabilizes
at idle speed to provide maximum oper-
ating performance and acceleration.
NOTICE:
Failure to do so will shorten
engine life.
[ECM04550]
2. Check that the low oil pressure-alert in-
dicator remains off.
NOTICE:
If the low
oil pressure-alert indicator blinks af-
ter the engine starts, stop the engine.
Otherwise, serious engine damage
could occur. Consult your Yamaha
dealer.

Shifting
While the boat is tightly moored, and without
applying throttle, confirm that the engine
shifts smoothly into forward and reverse, and
back to neutral.

Idle speed (in neutral):
650–750 r/min (VF250XA)
