Software
This chapter describes the components of the Xerox 4890
HighLight Color Laser Printing System (LPS) operating system
software (OSS), as well as some of the options for host software
and personal computer (PC) software.
4890 operating system software
The operating system software is an integral part of the laser
printing system and is required to operate your printer,
regardless of whether you are operating in the online or the
offline configuration. The OSS handles many tasks invisible to
the operator, including the low-level control of the printer
hardware.
The OSS also includes the command languages used to define
electronic forms, job processing information, and copy
processing information. These tasks are described in the
following paragraphs.
LPS editor
The LPS editor is used to enter the commands for the OSS
languages: Print Description Language (PDL) and Forms
Description Language (FDL). The editor facilitates the editing and
manipulation of the source files. From the editor, the source
files are stored on the system disk and then compiled in a
separate step.
Print Description Language
PDL is used to describe the input, logical processing, and output
requirements of a print job. Refer to the Xerox 4890 HighLight
Color LPS PDL Reference for more information.
Forms Description Language
FDL is a laser printing system resident language for designing
electronic forms that can include logos, signatures, highlight
color, and shading. Refer to the Xerox 4890 HighLight Color LPS
Forms Creation Reference for more information.
Host software
This section describes a few of the many host software packages
compatible with the 4890 LPS. If you need information on a
specific program, please contact your sales representative.
