LPS comparison
The Xerox 4890 Laser Printing System (LPS) has many standard
and optional features that distinguish it from other Xerox Laser
Printing Systems. Although most print jobs are interchangeable
with other Xerox printers, this chapter points out the unique
qualities of the 4890 running Version 4 software. This will help
you to determine if your system is compatible with other Xerox
printers at your site.
This chapter contains LPS compatibility and comparison charts as
well as a summary of the unique hardware and software features
of the 4890 LPS.
Hardware
System disk capacity
One 400 MB fixed disk and may be configured with three
additional 400 MB disks.
1/4-inch cartridge tape drive option
The optional 1/4-inch cartridge tape drive provides alternate
backup capability (maximum of 320 or 525 MB depending on the
choice of tape cartridge) for the disk subsystem.
Customized transfer blade
The transfer blade, used to reduce the occurrence of print
deletions on paper that is not perfectly flat, has four standard
lengths that can be adjusted automatically to work with standard
size paper (11, 11.7, 13, and 14 inch/279, 297, 330, and 356
mm). It is also possible to cut a single custom blade (installed by
a service representative) to fit any non-standard size paper.
Customer changeable unit
The customer changeable unit (CCU) includes the color
developer housing and the dry ink bottle. The unit is removed
using the CCU cart when the operator wishes to change the
highlight primary color. The CCU remains on the cart for storage
purposes. Therefore, it is necessary to have a cart for each color
the operator wishes to print with the 4890, always leaving an
extra cart available for changing CCUs.
Attention light
A light is mounted on the printer control console to alert
operators when a problem in the printer requires their attention.
This might include a paper jam, empty tray, or depleted toner.
Mode and color icons
The printer control console has two displays: one that indicates
the mode the LPS is running (either highlight color or black) and
one that indicates the color of the dry ink in the color developer
housing currently installed.
Tri-level xerography
The raster output scanner (ROS) on the 4890 LPS has the ability
to expose both the white and the highlight primary color images
in a single pass. It is this advanced technology that makes
highlight printing possible. Creating both images at once
ensures near perfect registration and unreduced throughput on
the printer.
