LPS CONNECTIONS
Connectivity options for DEC VAX and MicroVAX mainframes
To determine the appropriate connectivity option for your DEC
mainframe environment, consider the interface option you use
and the data stream to be output by your software applications.
Interface options
A 4890 LPS connected to either a DEC VAX or MicroVAX system
in the VMS environment can be configured for either a
communications or network interface. The communications
interface may be either local or remote.
Communications interface
A DEC VAX/VMS platform can use the XPMF-VMS option to
connect to a 4890 through a DEC communications interface. For
a local connection, the Xerox supplied modem eliminator may be
used to provide a point-to-point communications link. You can
use modems to create a remote connection.

DEC VAX/VMS mainframe
The XPMF software is installed on the host to generate DJDEs
from the Digital DCL PRINT command and accommodate the
physical linkage using the Digital DDCMP protocol.
Refer to the XPMF-VMS product literature for more details on this
interface option.
Data streams
In this configuration, application output is in ASCII text plus DJDE
format. No data stream conversion is required. A front end
processor is not applicable.
Color specification
Enhanced PDL commands support highlight color. Refer to the
Xerox 4890 HighLight Color LPS PDL Reference for more
information.
