All U44 fireplaces may be installed in a covered outdoor area when following the requirements stated below:
• Fireplace must be installed in a weather proof enclosure while still following all clearance to combustible
materials as outlined in the fireplace’s manual.
•
The fireplace cannot serve as part of the
building’s insulation or weatherproofing
barrier. The building must be properly
insulated and sealed from the outside
prior to installation of the fireplace.
•
The fireplace must be protected by an
overhang with a depth that is at least
equal to half of its height from the base
of the fireplace, as shown in Figure 50.
Example - If the overhang height = 8ft
(2.4m) then the required overhang depth
must be at least 4ft (1.2m)
• The width of the covered overhang on
each side of the fireplace must also be
at least equal to half of its height
Example - If the overhang height = 8ft
(2.4m) then the overhang must extend
at least 4ft (1.2m) past each side of the
fireplace opening
•
Fireplace may only utilize the Cool
Surface System (CSS), or any variant
of it, when the covered overhang is flat
with no pitch in front or to the side of
the fireplace.
•
For models equipped with remote control, neither “Smart Mode” nor Thermostat is permitted for use. The
fireplace may not be wired to an external thermostat.
•
Plated finish surround panels are not permitted for outdoor installation due to the high potential for
oxidation to form on the surface.
•
Any outdoor furnishings must be kept a minimum of 3ft (0.9m) away from the front of the fireplace.
• Electrical and gas connections must follow applicable codes and standards pertaining to outdoor
installations.
•
Horizontal termination caps must not discharge into the same space shared by the front of the fireplace.
Vertical termination caps are recommended.
