J-Series Data Radio – User Manual
Issue 09-10
Repeated connections to multiple devices with same IP address
A common problem experienced when attempting to configure multiple radios with the same IP address (such as factory default radios). The
problem is due to invalid MAC table entries. If you change your Ethernet connection between two devices with the same IP address quickly, you
may need to reset the MAC look up table in your PC. You can do this by typing “arp -d *” in the command window.
Static and DHCP IP allocation
The J-Series radio give you the choice of IP allocation, via either Static or Dynamic (DHCP) IP address allocation. The choice of which to use will
normally depend on the network you are integrating the radio into or the type of application you are trying to use the radio for.
Most large corporate environments utilize the DHCP method where a DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP address when requested to devices
connected to its network. This allows for very large networks to be managed very easily without the need for complex IP address tables to be
maintained.
Static IP address allocation is used in smaller environments or where the application being used requires a constant IP address for correct
operation. The type of IP allocation should be discussed with your network administrator is connecting to an existing network or decided in the
network design phase to ensure correct operation.
Compression
In determining whether to use compression or not the type of application and the latency requirements are the most important considerations. A
knowledge of your data transmission is needed to ensure no adverse effect on the data transmission occur. Applications such as video or Audio
are suitable to the use of compression as these data types are typically very noisy and the application of compression removes a lot of noise
and causes no noticeable loss of quality. Straight data application are not suited to the use of compression as it will increase the latency and the
possibility of data Loss would be increased.
