DRIVE SHAFT AND GEARBOX
SERVICE

Drive Shaft Removal & Installation

Refer to Figure 30 for the following procedure.

1. To remove the drive shaft from the gearbox, loosen

the setscrew (A, Figure 30) sufficiently to allow
removal of the drive shaft-to-gearbox yoke (B) from
the gearbox input shaft.

2. Remove both 1/4-20 locknuts (C) and the capscrew

(D) from the drive shaft gearbox yoke (B).

3. Carefully slip the driveshaft off the gearbox input

shaft. Remove the key (E) from its slot in the input
shaft. Remove the drive shaft from the unit.

NOTE: Before ordering parts, identify the drive shaft.
Weasler drive shafts have the name stamped on the joint
and shaft. Neapco drive shafts are unmarked.

4. Install in reverse order of removal.

Drive Shaft Disassembly

1. Slide the PTO end yoke out of the drive shaft tube

assembly.

2. A spring lock repair kit is available if required; check

the appropriate parts manual listing. To remove the
locking collar (A, Figure 31) from the PTO end of the
drive shaft, compress the locking collar and spring (B)
against the yoke and pry the retaining ring out of its
groove to remove the collar. Two spherical retaining
bearings are revealed, captured within orifices

machined perpendicular to the splines (C).

3. Remove the spherical retaining bearings, then slip off

the locking collar (A), spring (B) and spring seat bear-
ing (D) at the base of the yoke.

NOTE: When re-installing the spring, orient the tapered
or "smaller" end of the spring against the spring seat
bearing and drive shaft yoke.

4. Some cross and bearing assemblies (commonly

referred to as “U-joints”) contain a lube fitting. The
lube fitting (E) is threaded into a lube fitting adapter
(F) that in turn is threaded into the cross and bearing
assembly. Inspect, then remove and replace these
lube fitting components if required.

5. The cross and bearing assemblies are secured to the

yokes with C-clips. The C-clip retaining bosses are
machined on the inner surface of the yokes. If replac-
ing a cross and bearing assembly, pry out the C-clips,
then remove the cross and bearing assembly.

6. DO NOT damage or distort the yoke, shaft or tube.

Tap or press out the cross and bearing assembly
from the yoke.

7. Clean and inspect all components. Replaced dam-

aged parts as required.

Drive Shaft Assembly

1. Assemble in reverse order of disassembly.
2. Use a suitable multi-purpose grease and, via the lube

fittings, lubricate the drive shaft and cross and bear-
ing assemblies.
