SHAFT AND TRUNION SEALS
Lip type seals are used throughout the transmission.
These seals can be replaced without disassembly of the
transmission. Pry the seal carefully out of the housing
bore, using care not to distort the housing or damage the
bore of the shaft. Once removed, the seal is not
reusable.
Prior to installing the new seal on the fan shaft (A, Figure
18) or input shaft (B), polish the shaft extension, wrap it
in thin plastic, and lubricate with hydraulic oil to ensure
that the seal is not damaged during assembly. Slide the
seal over the shaft and press it into the housing bore.
In the case of trunnion shaft seals (C, Figure 18), it is
necessary that the retaining rings (E) and washers (D)
be removed before removing the seals (C). The washers
should be replaced if either is noticeably bent or distort-
ed.
CHARGE CHECK VALVES
Remove the check valve cartridges complete with seals
(A, B, C, and D, Figure 16) from the housing. Press on
poppet (A, Figure 17) using a paper clip, and ensure
there is a slight spring load. Load the valves with solvent
and allow them to sit for 15 minutes, during which time
there should be no leakage. Inspect the valve seat in
housing for damage, and remove any foreign material in
the valve area. Replace parts as required and reinstall in
the housing bore. Apply grease to the tops of the check
valves.
Major Disassembly and Repair
NOTE: Prior to disassembly, scribe a mark on the control
side covering of the housing, center section, and charge
pump. This will verify reassembly and indicate correct
side for control trunnion shaft. See Figure 14.
Support transmission with shafts in a horizontal position
(refer to Figure 14).
Remove eight capscrews (A, Figure 19) and lift center
section (B) off housing.
NOTE: Screws attaching center section to housing are of
three different lengths.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not let internal parts fall when
removing center section.
If valve plates (C and D) remain on center section (B),
remove them.
