wood through the forward hatch, and tack it in place using
SP-EX.
-
Set up the mainmast 5.12 using the same procedure, and
tack the socket in place in the same way. Keep to the sta-
ted dimensions as closely as possible, so that the masts
are raked at the correct angles.
-
Remove the masts and deck and apply a narrow fillet of
ST-E round the mast sockets.
-
Cut the beech dowel spacers 5.13 to length, check that
they fit without forcing the hull out of shape and glue them
in place to stiffen the keel area of the hull - Fig. 53.
-
Glue the battery frame 5.14 in the hull, butting up against
the motor bulkhead at the rear - Fig. 54.
-
Double up the channel reinforcements 5.15 and glue them
to the inside of the hull as shown in Figs. 55 and 56. They
should lie flush with the top edge of the hull on both sides.
-
Drill 1.6 mm and 2.2 mm Ø holes in the four channels 5.16,
and cut the outside to the profile shown in Fig. 57.
-
Force the channels 5.16 to follow the curvature of the hull
by tapping them with a hammer on a hard surface such as
the jaws of a vice. Mark the front and rear channels to
avoid mixing them up - Figs. 58 and 59
-
Position the channels with the front holes in line with the
forward edge of the mast holes in the deck - Fig. 60.
-
Offer up the channels to the hull, mark the position of the
holes in the hull sides and drill them 1.6 mm Ø. Drill out the
holes in the channels to 2.3 mm Ø and countersink them
to accept the heads of the countersunk screws 5.17.
Screw the channels to the hull temporarily so that the scr-
ews cut their own threads - Fig. 61.
-
Remove the channels again.

Notes on deck planking
: the planking should be fitted with
the deck removed from the hull.
Planking the deck requires a lot of practice and patience;
especially the notched joints known as joggles.
There are two basic alternatives for carrying out the planking;
the first is the true scale arrangement complete with joggled
joints. This version is described in detail - Fig. 62.
In the simplified version the planks are trimmed to a simple
taper where they meet the central and outer strakes - Fig. 63.
In both versions ABS strips of 0.5 x 2 mm cross-section are
glued between the strakes to represent the white caulking.
All the planking and caulking strips are glued in place using
SP-T2.
-
Do take particular care over the symmetry of the deck
planking. The easiest way of ensuring this is to work alter-
nately on both sides: after you have fitted the first strake on
the right, repeat the procedure on the left-hand side. Truly
symmetrical deck planking looks good, and also avoids the
danger of the deck warping when the planking is attached.
-
Start by marking the various guide lines on the deck. Fig.
64 shows all the essential lines together with the abbrevia-
tions used to identify them.
-
The first step is to mark the base line BL, and for this you
will need the two jig strips HL 3; they should be fixed to the
forward hatch and the large hatch using spring clamps.
-
At the point of the bow clamp the strips in place with the
inside line running exactly to the corner of the notch on
each side. Fit spacer strips 5 mm wide on each side of the
after hatch as shown.
-
Sight along the clamped strips to ensure that they form
even, harmonious curves, then mark the lines BL by dra-
wing along the inside of the jig strips.
-
Make up the template SD from the die-cut parts SD 1 and
SD 2 as shown in Fig. 66. Note the position of the radius.
-
File the notches spaced at 15 mm and 3.5 mm as shown.
-
Mark the outside line on the deck with the help of the tem-
plate SD, spaced 15 mm from the edge of the deck - Fig.
67. Continue this line along the top of the transom.
-
You have already marked the centreline ML on the deck;
make sure it is properly visible.
-
Starting from the second hatch draw the joint line SL at
right-angles to the centreline, then mark the additional joint
lines spaced at 50 mm intervals over the entire deck.
Check that the lines are at right-angles.
