Heat Pump fundamentals and intended operation
The RED heat pump captures energy from the outside air and uses this energy to heat a wet
space heating system or hot water storage tank.
The advantage of the heat pump compared to alternative heating appliances is that it used
the free energy that surrounds us and our homes and so produces much more heat energy to
what it consumes in electrical energy. This energy that is in the air and can be extracted and
used by the RED heat pumps even down to as low as -20°C and is completely renewable and
clean. It gives the heat pump heating efficiency greater than any other heating technology
and more importantly zero emissions. This is all achieved through a transfer of heat from the
air to your home thanks to a thermodynamic cycle which utilizes the latency effect of a
refrigerant. RED have optimised this cycle and the components within the heat pump to give
maximum efficiency and capacity to bring optimal thermal comfort to your home. The basic
operation in heating mode is explained below.
The compressor works as a pump causing refrigerant gas to be compressed and hence flow
around the closed system. The condenser exchanges the heat from this hot compressed gas
into the heating circuit of the home heating system. This caused a state change in the
refrigerant from a hot gas to a warm liquid as the refrigerant condenses. An expansion valve
is used to increase the system efficiency in an economized system and operating range by
subcooling the warm liquid refrigerant to a cooler temperature whilst evaporating off a small
portion of the refrigerant back to the compressor. The main flow then enters the heating
expansion valve which expands the refrigerant into the evaporator as a cold liquid vapor. The
round coil and fan arrangement have been optimised to draw high energy air through the fins
and so that even at extremely low temperatures the low-pressure liquid vapor refrigerant can
