How to Operate the Voltage Amplifier
19
7.4 Operation
7.4.1 Connecting the Power Supply
The nano box USB is powered by 24V DC. Connect the device with the included wide range power supply
adapter and connect the adapter to the public power supply. The included wide range power supply adapter
can operate within 100 ... 240V AC.
7.4.2 Connecting the Piezoelectric Actuator
The piezoelectric actuator has to be attached to the 15-pin D-SUB connector (piezo 0...130V). Please make
sure that the amplifier is switched off before connecting or disconnecting the piezoelectric actuator (remove
the USB cable). Attach the connector firmly with the screwing on the device to prevent accidental loosening.
Connect the nano box USB to your PC by using the supplied USB cable. The LED for monitoring switches to
permanent red.
If the USB driver has been installed already on the PC then the PC initializes the USB connection to the nano
box USB. The LED for monitoring switches to permanent red for about 2 to 5 seconds and then it flashes
green. If the LED for monitoring switches to permanent green then the PC has finished the initialization of the
USB connection and the nano box USB has recognized the piezoelectric actuator successfully. If there is no
valid actuator attached to the nano box USB then the LED for monitoring flashes red at short intervals. If this
error occurs while a valid actuator is attached to the device then please recheck the correct attachment of the
connector.
7.4.3 Controlling via USB (VCP)
The nano box USB can only be controlled via the USB interface. The USB interface is accessible from the PC
as a virtual COM port (VCP).
Controlling includes the retrieval of the actual piezoelectric voltage or the actual position, the configuration of
the desired piezoelectric voltage or the desired position and the selection of the operation mode. This enables
automation of complex procedures by using the PC.
To get started operating, a terminal program that connects to the COM port is a simple requirement.
The USB driver that enables the virtual COM port on the PC can be downloaded from the website
www.piezojena.com
under Downloads & Publications. Demo software and software for the integration into
LabVIEW are provided, too.

8.1 Output Connector for Actuator D-SUB15pin (male)
This connector provides the power supply of the piezoelectric actuator. It outputs the desired piezoelectric
voltage and provides the voltage supply of the measurement system of the actuator. The measured voltage
signal of the measurement system and the data from internal memory of the actuator are transferred back to
the device.
