EIA
Electronic Industries Association. This organization provides standards for the data
communications industry.
ETC
Enhanced Throughput Cellular. A Paradyne proprietary error correction protocol
for cellular communications.
gateway channel
A set of DS0s, voice ports, and modems that work together to process a single
back-to-back data call in the WDG. A gateway channel is active when the modems
in the channel are training or connected to modems, and idle all other times.
Group III
A fax standard that specifies a rate of transmission of about one page per minute.
ITU-T
The Telecommunications Standardization Sector of the International
Telecommunications Union, an advisory committee established by the United
Nations to recommend communications standards and policies. Before March 1993
it was called CCITT.
MNP 10
Microcom Networking Protocol 10. A Microcom proprietary error correction
protocol for cellular communications.
modem bank
An organized array of dial modems, such as the modems loaded in an individual
carrier.
modem pool
A number of modems grouped logically such that individual modems are accessible
according to availability by addressing the group.
NI
Network Interface. The junction of the Wireless Data Gateway system with the
network switch.
NIM
Network Interface Module. The hardware interface between the WDG and the
network switch.
NMS
Network Management System. A set of diagnostic and configuration management
tools for a data communication network, consisting of software programs and
dedicated computer hardware.
off-hook
The condition of a telephone or modem that is being used to establish or maintain
communication.
offline
The condition of a modem that is not connected to another modem.
on-hook
The condition of a telephone or modem that is not being used.
online
The condition of a modem that is connected to and communicating with another
modem.
PBX
Telephone switching equipment (Private Branch Exchange) dedicated to one
customer. A PBX connects private telephones to each other and to the public dial
network.
PCMCIA
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. Standard used to
define the physical and operational characteristics of a “credit card” device.
PSTN
Public Switched Telephone Network.
