Install the NIMs
A NIM on the left side of the backplane operates with
modems located in slots 9–16 of the carrier, and a NIM on
the right side of the backplane operates with modems in
slots 1–8. Use the following instructions to install a NIM.

Procedure
CAUTION
Always use a ground strap
when handling a NIM. Always
store an unused NIM in an
antistatic bag.
1. Prepare a static-free work area.
2. Ensure that you have all parts available: a NIM, its
three cables, and four screws. See the equipment
list in Appendix C.
3. Plug the short PBX cable terminated with the
26-position mini D-sub connector into the socket
numbered J1 (on the right side of the backplane)
or J2 (on the left side). See Figure 3-1.
4. Carefully align the connectors on the side of the
NIM opposite the steel cover with connectors P23
and P24 (on the right side of the backplane), or
connectors P25 and P26 (left side). Press the NIM
into place and fasten it to the carrier with the four
screws furnished.
5. Insert the 16-position socket at the other end of the
short PBX cable into its mating right-angle
connector at the lower left corner of the NIM.
Press firmly to lock it in place.
