Configuring the Bus Devices
The devices installed on the NAVINET 4000 Steering Control Network must be
correctly configured to communicate with each other. This includes all SCUs, all
BIUs and all NAVIPILOT 4000 CDUs included in the system.
A number of important system parameters are programmed into and stored in the
SCU(s). The SCU has no user interface and must be configured from a connected
bus device. At the time of writing of this manual, the NAVIPILOT 4000 CDU is the
only bus device capable of accessing the SCU setup menu.
With each NAVIGUIDE 4000 system, a CDU will provided for installation pur-
poses. In case of manual steering only systems, the CDU used for configuration
must be disconnected from the NAVINET 4000 bus during normal operation.
The remaining non-SCU units, including all CDUs, have individual settings that
must be configured at the respective unit itself. There may be as few as one, or as
many as twenty or more units to configure.
The highest number of units installed will probably be determined by customer re-
quirements rather than a system limitation.
5.1.1
Configuring Steering Positions
5.1.1.1
Devices’ Positions and Names
Every bus device (BIU or CDU) is assigned a steering position during configura-
tion. Units physically grouped at the same location, such as e.g. the port wing are
generally assigned the same position, i.e. „port wing“.
Each bus device is also assigned a name. In most cases the name is selected to
match the assigned position, but a different name may be assigned if required.
The name is used to indicate the specific unit that has active control.
Every system will normally have at least one bus device assigned to the Main
steering position (there may be exceptions made in special cases, such as megay-
achts and other non-IMO vessels).
Eleven pre-defined remote position designations are provided. Additionally, eight
placeholders („free names“) may be used to store user-defined position designa-
tions and device names.
