Operating Procedures
2.3.1
Engaging / Disengaging Bus Steering
2.3.1.1
In Systems with a Mechanical Mode Selector
If a mechanical steering mode selector is installed at the main steering position,
bus steering is automatically engaged or disengaged by selecting the desired
steering mode (see 2.3.2.1).
2.3.1.2
In Systems with a Steering Mode Selector / NFU Tiller
If a Steering Mode Selector / NFU Tiller is installed at the main steering position,
bus steering is engaged by putting the selector to „Secondary“. Bus steering is
disengaged by putting the selector to „Non Follow Up“.
After the selector has been put to „Secondary“, the system will be in the FU steer-
ing mode with the main steering position being active.
Subsequent changeover to a different bus steering mode or steering position is
accomplished by the Steering Mode Selector (SMS) and the Steering Position Se-
lector (SPS) bus interface units respectively.
Warning
The person in charge of navigation must ensure that all personnel have a
working knowledge of the steering mode selection and control transfer
methods used for the particular installation, including optional override ca-
pabilities at devices external to the system. Inappropriate operation could
result in hazards to navigation, resulting in danger to personnel.
When the Takeover control transfer method is configured or when override
devices are installed at remote steering positions, it is important to realize
how easy it is to take over control at a new steering position. Personnel ac-
cess to positions with takeover and/or override devices must be appropri-
ately restricted or monitored.
Note
In certain cases, instead of the Steering Mode Selector / NFU Tiller, a mechanical
mode switch with only two possible selections (bus steering / non-bus steering)
may be installed. The function of such a selector is identical to that of the Steering
Mode Selector / NFU tiller.
