5.2: Configuring the Steering Gear Control

5.2.1.2

Directional / Dump Valve Staging

When output staging is used, the output sections above Stage 1 may be config-
ured either as directional or as dump stages.

Directional staging

Directional staging is used when each pump section acts on a set of port and star-
board solenoid valves. The hydraulic flow from the individual stages is taken in
parallel to the the pump cylinder. When the sections’ „Pump On“ status inputs are
used, each active stage may take the place of the next lowest inactive stage, in-
cluding stage 1.

Dump staging

Dump staging is used when only the first pump section („Stage 1“) acts on a set of
directional control valves whereas the higher stages act on simple flow control
valves. The hydraulic flow from the dump stages is taken in parallel to the first
stages’ directional valve. When the sections’ „Pump On“ status inputs are used,
each active dump stage may take the place of the next lowest inactive dump
stage, but a dump stage can never go below „Dump 2“.
