2 TROUBLE SHOOTING
E20
Battery open circuit or
not charged
Check no-load voltage with meter. Crank and
observe volt age. If voltage drops below 9 volts
while cranking, check charging system. If charging
system is OK, replace battery.
E21
Battery short circuit or
not charged
Check no-load voltage with meter. If voltage is
less than 12.0 volts, check charging system. If
charging system is OK, replace battery.
E22
Alternator/regulator
defective
With power switch turned off, connect an ammeter
with a range of 0-60 DC in-line between battery
and alternator. Start. Check current and voltage.
If voltage does not rise above 13V and current is
less than 6 amps, replace alterna tor. If voltage
rises above 15V, replace alternator.
E23
Pressure switch out of
adjustment or defective
Test for contact closing and opening. Adjust
or replace as required
E24
Wiring short-circuited
to hot feed
Check for short circuit or water infiltration.
Repair or replace as needed
E25
Wiring short-circuited
to ground
Check for short circuit or water infiltration.
Repair or replace as needed
E26
Motor brushes
defective
Remove brush cover. Check condition and
tension of brushes. Replace and/or adjust
tension as needed.
E27
Motor armature
commutator defective
Inspect commutator for burning, wear,
segment loss, insulation creepage. Reface
commutator or replace armature as needed.
E28
Motor armature or field
windings defective
Test for open or short circuit. Test for short
circuit to ground. Growler test armature.
Rewind or replace as required
To minimize risk of fire or explosion when charging a battery:
•
Keep sparks and flame away from battery to avoid battery gas explosion.
• If charging the battery while installed in the vehicle, disconnect the negative
(black) battery cable and then the positive (red) cable before connecting the
charger.
• With the charger unplugged and the switch OFF, connect the positive (red)
charger cable to the positive (+) battery terminal and then the negative (black)
charger cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.
• Set the charger for the correct voltage and charging rate. Then plug the charger
in and turn the switch ON.
• When charging is completed, turn the charger OFF, unplug it and then
disconnect negative and then positive cables. Reconnect the positive and then
the negative battery cables.
