• There may be zero, one, or two shims on the top of the axle, depending on
construction tolerances.
4. King Pin Bushing Removal and Replacement
• Remove old bushing by tapping them out with a punch or similar tool,
taking care to not damage the holes in the knuckle. Discard old bushing.
• Install new bushings by aligning the grease holes with the holes in the
knuckle. The holes in the bushings are not centered. Be sure the "short"
side is installed first, to ensure the grease hole aligns with the hole in the
bushing.
• Gently tap the new bushings into their holes, taking care that they are not
bent, warped or otherwise damaged.
• Using a hand reamer or hone, size the new bushings so that the king pin
can be installed into the bushings. Take care to not oversize the bushings
as excessive play will introduce premature wear.
