1-26 Using Your Computer
SYSTEM OPERATION
The sections that follow describe procedures you use
to operate your computer. These procedures include:

starting up and shutting down the system
■
loading diskettes
■
loading CDs (multimedia models)
■
using power management features
■
resetting the system
■
backing up the system.
Start-Up/Shutdown
When you power on your computer, it looks for specific
files that contain the configuration information it needs to
operate properly. The system accesses the following files:

CONFIG.SYS
This text file tells the computer where in memory to
load the operating system (MS-DOS), what device
drivers to install, and what memory management
features to activate.
For example, CONFIG.SYS directs the computer to
load the video drivers that identify your monitor type
and the mouse driver that activates the mouse. When the
system boots and accesses CONFIG.SYS, MS-DOS
is activated, device drivers are loaded, and memory
management features are executed.
