Glossary

Application module

Application modules are programs or parts of programs for
the PLC or PC which either support a function in an applica-
tion or execute it entirely. Application modules provide
ready-made solutions for a wide range of applications.

Asymmetrical configuration

Configurations of telecontrol stations consisting of primary
and secondary stations are referred to as asymmetrical
configurations.

Asynchronous transmission

Each frame character is synchronised individually, usually by
start and stop elements.

Central station

The station which remotely monitors and/or remotely
controls the outstations.

Character

Convention for the data format, e.g. 1 start bit, 8 data bits, 1
check bit, 1 stop bit, i.e. 1 character = 11 bits.

DCE

Data communication equipment, see also Modem

Dial-up line

A transmission line that is available after a dial-up connec-
tion.

DTE
D

ata

erminal

quipment may include computers, terminals

or other input/output devices. A DTE which transmits data is
referred to as a data source. A DTE which receives data is
known as a data sink.

Handshake

A defined sequence of signals for setting up and checking a
connection.
