Intermec EasyCoder 501 – Service Manual Ed. 7
Chapter 15
15. Scaleable Fonts Kit
15.1 Description
EasyCoder 501 S, E, and LL printers can be fi tted with an optional
fi rmware package, that allows the printer to use scaleable outline
fonts in Speedo and TrueType formats. The printer must not be
fi tted with Flash Memory packages instead of EPROMs in IC-100
to IC-103. IC-104 and IC-105 must be vacant.
The kit consists of two EPROMs and a GAL circuit. The EPROMs
contain a selection of outline fonts and fi rmware for scaling them,
whereas the GAL circuit is necessary for the printer to use the fi rm-
ware.
Speedo and TrueType are standard outline font formats for per-
sonal computers developed by Bitstream, Inc. and Apple Com-
puter, Inc. respectively. There are thousands of different fonts
available from Intermec at a low cost. The fonts come as fi les in
PC format and can be downloaded to the printer via the Kermit
communication protocol or be copied to a memory card, which is
inserted in the printer’s optional memory card adapter.
The Intermec Fingerprint statement FONT converts the selected
outline font according to the specifi ed characteristics to Finger-
print’s internal bitmap font format, after which it can be used
as any other installed bitmap font (also see Intermec Fingerprint
v6.14, Reference Manual).
The Intermec Shell Enhanced startup program offers another con-
venient way of scaling outline fonts. When a Scaleable Fonts kit
is installed in an EasyCoder 501 E or 501 LL printer, additional
menus will be displayed in Intermec Shell. Refer to the Installation
& Operation manual for the printer in question.
The Scalable Fonts Kit consist of:
• Two EPROM packages containing the fi rmware for scaling
outline fonts plus a selection of outline font fi les and bar codes.
• One GAL circuit.
