Glossary
The following terms will assist you in under-
standing this document.
Numerics
1 Mbps mode When a twinax port is transmitting data
at 1 Mbps. This is the standard data transmission rate.
2 Mbps mode When a twinax port is transmitting data
at 2 Mbps. This is the Express data transmission rate.
5250 Express Data Stream A method by which 5250
emulation devices can gain additional throughput, yield-
ing increased performance. Supports the following
modes of operation: optimized mode and 2 Mbps mode.
A
active Pertaining to a node or device that is connected
or is available for connection to another node or device.
adapter (1) A part that electrically or physically con-
nects a device to a computer or to another device.
(2) A circuit board that adds function to a computer.
(3) Software that enables different software components
or products to interact with one another.
Application System/400 (AS/400) A family of prod-
ucts designed to offer solutions for commercial data pro-
cessing, office and communications environments, as
well as to provide simple, consistent programmer and
end-user interfaces for businesses of all sizes.
auto-removal The state in which a token-ring adapter
port removes itself from the network to perform self-
tests to verify that it is not the cause of a hard error. If
the tests are successful, the port will reattach itself to the
network.

beaconing The state that a token-ring adapter port
enters after it has detected a hard error. The error condi-
tion is reported to the other devices on the network. Bea-
coning can result in the port removing itself from the
network (auto-removal) to determine whether it is the
cause of the hard error.
bit Either of the digits 0 or 1 when used in the binary
numeration system.
bus A linear network topology in which all workstations
are connected to a single cable.

client A computer system or process that requests a
service of another computer system or process that is
typically referred to as a server.
configuration (1) The devices and programs that make
up a system, subsystem, or network.
(2) The arrangement of the machines, devices, and pro-
grams that make up a computer system.
connectionless A service/protocol in which individual
data units, messages, or packets are transferred without
relation to one another, without prior connection, and
with no guarantee of delivery.

datagram A term to describe a packet.
Distributed Protocol Interface (DPI) An interface
between a Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) agent and its subagents that is defined in
Request for Comments (RFC) 1592.
duplex Pertaining to communication in which data can
be sent and received at the same time. Contrast with
half-duplex.
E
end-user A person or program that uses the network.
Ethernet A 10-Mbps baseband local area network that
allows multiple stations to access the transmission
medium at will without prior coordination, avoids con-
tention by using carrier sense and deference, and
resolves contention by using collision detection and
delayed retransmission. Ethernet uses carrier sense mul-
tiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD).
F
frame A term to describe a packet.
fiber optic network A network based on the technology
and standards that define data transmission using cables
of glass or plastic fibers carrying light. The advantages
of a fiber optic network are higher transmission speeds,
greater carrying capacity, lower error rates, and lighter,
more compact cables that are less susceptible to electro-
magnetic interference.
