Chapter 2: Planning Your Installation
This chapter provides information for planning the installation of an IBM
5500 Express IP Control Unit, including:
• Laying out your installation
• Connecting the 5500 Express IP Control Unit to the AS/400
• Connecting the workstations to the 5500 Control Unit
Important: IBM recommends that you read and complete “Required
Configuration and Worksheet” on page 165 to aid your planning and
installation.
Installation Layout
To determine the layout of your installation and the cable lengths that are
required, use your building floor plan and wiring schedule. On the floor plan,
mark the location of the AS/400, the 5500 Control Unit and the workstations.
If your installation includes more than one site, mark up the floor plans for
each site.
You must determine:
• The number and location of the client workstations
• The number and location of the 5500 Control Units, including which
clients (workstations) should attach to each 5500 Control Unit.
• The location of power outlets for each workstation and for each 5500
Control Unit
• The location of the AS/400s, including which 5500 Control Unit should
attach to each AS/400 (if more than one is used)
• The method of attachment to the AS/400
• The method for attaching the client workstations and the 5500 Control
Unit to ensure the correct type of connection, pins, and twinax phase
Cable Requirements
This section explains the types of cables and how to determine the correct
cable length. IBM recommends that you label your cables in the event your
5500 Control Unit is moved or replaced.
Determining Cable Lengths
Referring to your wiring schedule, mark the actual wire paths on your floor
plan. Use this marked-up floor plan to help determine the cable lengths
required. When determining cable lengths, include the following
measurements:
