CAUTION
Electrostatic charging of the door in the event of solvent cleaner as
test liquid
Danger of uncontrolled electrostatic discharge and ignition of a
gas-air mixture.
u
Clean the door with a moist, lint-free cloth and commonly avail-
able antistatic materials.
8.3.1 Maintaining an electrostatically charged door
In certain circumstances, the door can become electrostatically
charged..
One possible cause of this is when two non-conducting sub-
stances (protective gloves (neoprene), door (Makrolon), cleaning
cloths (cellulose/cotton), are rubbed against one another. Static
charges of the materials arise thereby. A discharge may be accel-
erated by the ambient conditions, such as dry air and low external
temperatures.
One visual feature which comes about when using solvent clean-
ers as a test liquid is that a film that looks like a pasty mass forms
on the inside of the door. The static charge counteracts the low
surface tension of the hydrocarbon mixture.
If the same fluid is transferred from the statically charged surface
to a surface with no charge, the fluid will be distributed in the usual
manner.
The following points are useful:
– Rinse down the inside of the door with test liquid.
– Adjust the humidity in the surroundings.
– Clean the door with a moist, lint-free cloth and commonly avail-
able antistatic materials.
