b y HPDPS. The easiest w a y to set up y our p ermissions is to ha v e all the
prin ter devices in eac h ro om managed b y ph ysical prin ters in a dedicated set of
sup ervisors. This creates a corresp ondence b et w een the ph ysical organization of
the hardw are and the logical organization of the hardw are managemen t.
There are other w a ys to group ph ysical prin ters together for DCE securit y
managemen t purp oses. F or example, y ou might w an t to group together all
of the desktop prin ters used b y a particular user group. F ollo wing is a set of
o v erall guidelines y ou can follo w to create ph ysical prin ters that allo w the
correct p ermissions to y our prin ter op erator groups.
1. First, decide whic h sup ervisors will con tain the ph ysical prin ters
represen ting prin ter devices in a particular prin ter ro om. Y ou will probably
w an t to create new, dedicated sup ervisors using the pdstartsuv command.
2. Next, after creating the sup ervisors but b efore creating the ph ysical prin ters
con tained in the sup ervisors, create the prin ter op erator group for the ro om.
3. Give the group read and write p ermission for the DCE printer directory
of eac h sup ervisor for the ro om. See \Giving Y our DCE Groups P ermissions
to HPDPS Ob jects" for instructions.
4. Create the ph ysical prin ters in the sup ervisors. Create one ph ysical prin ter
for eac h prin ter device in the ro om. Because y ou already gav e the prin ter
op erator group read and write p ermission for the DCE printer directory
of eac h sup ervisor for the ro om, the prin ter op erator group automatically
gets read and write p ermission for eac h newly created ph ysical prin ter.
5. Give eac h p erson who is a prin ter op erator for the ro om mem b ership
in the prin ter-op erator group for the ro om. See the appropriate DCE
do cumen tation for instructions on ho w to do this.
If y ou ha v e already created the sup ervisors and the ph ysical prin ters
represen ting the prin ter devices in the ro om, y ou can to the follo wing tasks:
1. Arc hiv e the ph ysical prin ters (see \Creating Arc hiv e Files for Sup ervisors
and Sup ervisor Ob jects" in Chapter 10 for information on ho w to arc hiv e an
HPDPS ob ject).
2. Delete the ph ysical prin ters.
3. Mo dify the conguration of the securit y for the sup ervisors in the ro om.
