A beta radiation source, located in the lower head of the scanner, emits a stream of high-
speed electrons called beta particles. As the particles pass through the sheet, the fibers
absorb some of them. A receiver in the upper head collects those particles that pass
through the sheet.
The receiver detects the particles and converts them to an electric signal that is further
converted to a voltage.
The thickness and density of the sheet determines the number of particles absorbed by
the product. The thickness multiplied by the density is the mass per unit area, commonly
called the basis weight.
3.4.2
Moisture
Provides accurate, online moisture measurement of the paper.
How It Works:
Measurement is based on the principle that moisture in the sheet absorbs certain infrared
wavelengths while other wavelengths are unaffected.
The infrared light source in the lower head directs light through the sheet, and detectors in
the upper head capture the transmitted light. Wavelengths that have interacted with the
sheet are analyzed and used to determine the moisture content of the paper.
3.4.3
Caliper
The caliper sensor operates on the principle of magnetic reluctance to provide a stable,
accurate measurement of paper thickness.
How It Works:
An air-operated diaphragm forces the coil of an oscillator against the top of the sheet and
a plate against the bottom of the sheet.
As the thickness of the sheet varies, the distance between the plate and the coil varies,
changing the inductance of the coil and, thus, varying the frequency of the oscillator.
3.4.4
Color
Provides a variety of color-related paper measurements.
How It Works:
Measures the diffuse reflectance of a moving sheet, at 81 points across the ultraviolet and
visible spectrum (350-750nm), providing 5-nanometer resolution.
Provides reflectance spectra, color coordinates, brightness, and fluorescence index.
All sensor measurements, except reflectance spectra, are available in profile form,
providing visibility of quality across the full sheet.
