Firebird 2 User’s Guide
Chapter 7 – Troubleshooting
Why do the joystick and button controls behave erratically? Or
why don’t the controls work at all?
Run the Diagnostics tests in the Control Console first to check for hardware
problems. See the instructions in Chapter 3 for running Firebird 2 Diagnostics.
If your joystick tests OK or works fine in other games, the problem is usually
not with Firebird 2 itself. There are several other possible causes for this kind of
problem:
1.
Your joystick may not be enabled, or your game’s joystick calibration settings may be
incorrect. In many games, you must select or turn on joystick support.
Follow the game’s joystick calibration instructions carefully. Some games have
a specific procedure to make the game recognize a joystick (e.g., pressing
<ALT-J>). Check the game’s instructions. Select the topic
Calibration from the
Control Console’s Help for more information on joystick and software calibra-
tion.
2.
Another device in your computer may be using the game port’s address.
All game ports use a common address (201 Hex). A joystick will not work
properly if more than one device is using that address (e.g., other game ports,
scanner cards, light pen cards, etc.).
Note: If buttons defined as
keyboard commands work, but
buttons defined as joystick
buttons (and possibly the stick
and throttle controls as well) do
not work properly, the problem
is likely with your game port.
Check the joystick’s connection
to the game port, and make
sure that the game port is fully
functional and that it is the only
active game port in your
system. Read through these
problems and solutions for
more details.
